Making it up as we go along: writing for television

Let me let you in on a little secret – if season two of Sonnigsburg ever happens, we know where the story is headed. But if we only ever make six episodes, it’s a satisfying and self-contained story. It’s the whole first story we wanted to tell. We started with a premise, had a good idea of where episode six ended and worked our way to that ending. Writer Javier Grillo-Marxauch, who worked on the first season of Lost , posted a lengthy essay on his blog recently – discussing the old accusation that the series’ writers were just “making it up as we went along”. For me, the essay went a long way to explain a fundamental truth – writing for television is nearly always being made up as it goes along. That’s the nature of television production. Grillo-Marxauch does a great job at explaining the pressure the writing staff were under to build that first season on the back of an incredible pilot episode – a pilot that wasn’t necessarily written to begin the story they ended up telling

REVIEW: Jibber Jabber Jamboree, Ross Noble – Melbourne International Comedy Festival

“I was there the night he got cancelled,” Noble said last night about himself, about two-thirds of the way through another of his chaotic shows, that always feel like improv, mixed in with things that have been on his mind and maybe some scripted material weaved in just to make sure the show lasts an hour. My heart sank. I’ve always admired Noble for his gift of talking with the audience and finding new ways into and out of stories, digressions and tangents upon tangents and digressions, all the while heading somewhere ludicrous and funny. I’ve seen him on stage a couple of times but there may have been ten years since the last time and this time I was watching to perhaps figure out how he does it. Ross spent a lot of last night talking about his process and what the audience expects. My Favourite Theatre of 2023

Some years, you don’t really know what your theatre-going year has been like. Sometimes, you’re seeing good things and bad things and when you get to the end of the year, the top ten might come easily – because they are outstanding or because there wasn’t that much competition. This year, I knew things were strong. This year, the major companies were doing great things. And the independent scene was going off – with some really groundbreaking stuff appearing all over the place. I didn’t realise, though, how tough it was going to be for me to choose my Top Ten and my Next Ten. Even in other great years, there were usually stand-outs – even if I did agonise over who I might have to drop down to my Honourable Mentions list. Or not mention at all. This year I had to expand my list… I try to be tough on myself when I make these lists, but this year, it was theatre that was tough on me. Because so much of it was so wonderful. As always, the individual lists are in alphabetical order.
